When Mayor Patterson ran for office, he saw the need to revitalize Kettering neighborhoods and housing stock. With the Love Your Block Blueprint, the Mayor’s Office combined their ongoing participation in national Make a Difference Day with Cities of Service to develop an ongoing neighborhood revitalization initiative. Kettering Cares encourages community pride in one low-income neighborhood every year by helping citizen volunteers improve their neighborhoods through general cleanup, home repair, landscaping, energy conservation, weatherization, education, and participation.
Kettering has been a member of the Cities of Service coalition since 2012, when Mayor Patterson signed the Declaration of Service.

“It is because of our volunteer tradition, and the fact that our volunteers always help when asked, that I didn’t hesitate to pledge to find creative ways to utilize the time and talent of volunteers to address our City’s greatest need, neighborhood revitalization. I was excited to join my fellow mayors from around our nation to become an active member of the Cities of Service initiative.”
