Congratulations To The U.S. Conference Of Mayors On Endorsement Of National Service

A

t its 82nd Annual Meeting last weekend, the U.S. Conference of Mayors unanimously passed a resolution to endorse national service as a cost-effective solution for many of the challenges facing cities today. Led by Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson, a Cities of Service coalition co-founder, the mayors passed the resolution to signify the importance of volunteer service in their local communities.

Cities of Service applauds the mayors for making such an important declaration, including committing to working with organizations at the local level that partner with programs such as AmeriCorps, Senior Corps, and AmeriCorps VISTA, encouraging other cities to help create additional sources of funding for national service, and placing a priority on hiring AmeriCorps alumni with valuable skills.

As part of a national effort to further the impact of service in cities across the country, the resolution represents a strong commitment to national service and illustrates that our country’s mayors understand the value of engaging their local citizens in service to help solve the most pressing challenges in their own communities.

We are particularly proud of the Cities of Service coalition mayors who attended the meeting and helped pass the resolution.
