In 2018, Milwaukee was named one of ten winners of the Cities of Service City Hall AmeriCorps VISTA Love Your Block competition. Cities of Service awarded each winning city $25,000 to be used for mini-grants and provides ongoing technical assistance and resources to support the efforts of citizen groups and local nonprofits to fight property blight through home repairs, lot transformations, and community cleanups.
As Milwaukee’s Chief Executive, Tom Barrett has prioritized strengthening Milwaukee neighborhoods with planning, strategic investments, and innovative programs. Barrett’s leadership has been instrumental in Milwaukee’s success reimagining former industrial sites, navigating the local impact of national housing issues, and promoting growth in the center of Milwaukee. Mayor Barrett has championed the creation of family-supporting jobs and provided assistance to entrepreneurs.

Mayor Tom Barrett
Tom Barrett grew up on Milwaukee’s West side, graduated college and law school from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, was a member of both the Wisconsin State Assembly and Senate and served five terms in the U.S. Congress. Since being elected Milwaukee’s 40th Mayor in 2004, Mayor Barrett has focused on making Milwaukee neighborhoods a better place to live, work, and play by strengthening public safety services, creating an array of workforce initiatives, and investing in sustainable infrastructure.
Department of City Development Community Outreach Liaison Angela Mitchell Reid
Angela Mitchell Reid is the Community Outreach Liaison for the City of Milwaukee Department of City Development (DCD). Prior to joining DCD, she worked in the Office of Environmental Sustainability for the City of Milwaukee. Angela is passionate about building relationships with residents and revitalizing Milwaukee’s undeserved communities.

2018-2020
Love Your Block enables local governments to engage communities in neighborhood revitalization efforts benefiting low-income communities. Our newest Love Your Block program, announced in July 2018, was specifically targeted to legacy cities – older, industrial cities that have faced substantial population loss.
