In 2017, the City of San Leandro experienced record levels of rainfall, which caused a significant amount of damage, including flooding, fallen trees, and broken roadways. San Leandro is one of seven cities taking part in the Prepared Together program. Through this program, the city is engaging with its citizens to bolster disaster preparedness with initiatives like Prepared San Leandro and its Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), which offers emergency preparedness training courses for citizen volunteers. San Leandro also participated in the Bay Area Impact Volunteering program.
San Leandro has been a member of the Cities of Service coalition since 2016, when Mayor Pauline Russo Cutter signed the Declaration of Service.

Blueprint
Storm Busters
Urban areas lack green spaces to absorb rainfall, causing pollution and flooding. The Cities of Service Storm Busters Blueprint creates green spaces and improves waterways to decrease storm damage.
Program
Bay Area Impact Volunteering
Through the Bay Area Impact Volunteering program, the city created Prepared San Leandro — an “Adopt a Drain” program that recruits volunteers to help keep storm drains clear of leaves and refuse. From May of 2016 to May of 2017, volunteers adopted 126 drains, or 5 percent of all the drains in the city. Drain adopters play a critical role in assisting the city in reducing the number of clogged storm inlets that often result in dangerous flooding to roadways, homes, and businesses.
