Supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies, Cities of Service spins off as an independent nonprofit to provide more programs and resources to mayors and cities. Myung J. Lee is selected to serve as the organization’s first executive director.

January 2015

Beginning with 17 cities in 2009, the Cities of Service coalition breaks the 200 mark.

August 2015

The Corporation for National and Community Service selects Cities of Service to launch inaugural program to build resilience in vulnerable communities in 10 cities, with support from The Rockefeller Foundation.

June 2016

For the first time, Cities of Service brings together 16 mayors from across the U.S. to discuss how government can better engage its citizens to solve public problems.

April 2017

With renewed support from the Walmart Foundation, seven participating cities in the Bay Area and Northern New Jersey regions each receive $25,000 and two AmeriCorps VISTA members to engage citizens in disaster preparedness.

May 2018

Bologna, Italy, Santiago de Cali, Colombia and Tulsa, Oklahoma win Award for incredible work to remove barriers to engagement and foster collaboration between citizens and city government.

November 2018

The second annual Engaged Cities Award shines a light on successful citizen engagement happening in cities in the Americas and Europe.

July 2019

The program helps city leaders engage residents to achieve positive economic and social outcomes with community-informed Opportunity Zone investments.

July 2020

Centers for Civic Impact empower the public sector through expertise, training, research, and collaboration.
